In a new review for The Wall Street Journal, auto writer Dan Neil praises the all-new 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack for being an understated yet extremely capable alternative to larger, less economical crossovers. In fact, the Alltrack has standard all-wheel drive, a healthy 6.9 inches of ground clearance and still starts at less than $30,000.
The Golf Alltrack features a relatively modest 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Yet it's definitely up to tasks like hauling around five passengers in relative comfort or up to 66.5 cubic feet of cargo (with the rear seats folded).
